Spyware Safety Guide

Image Spyware is one of the biggest issues facing home and business users. It is invasive, not coded great, and is a security risk. We are going to go over what it really takes to be spyware free.

In the ever evolving war on spyware and the ever evolving war the spyware creators have on Windows, it only takes a visit to the wrong style of website to become a victim of spyware. Spyware comes in many flavors. There is tracking spyware, ad serving spyware, malicious spyware, and many other styles and types of spyware.

The best weapons for this war on spyware is:

#1 - Your web browser. The most secure browser of them all is Firefox. It can't secure you from everything but it sure helps. Internet Explorer is buggy and to feature rich to allow secure access to the Internet. Take a few of the bells and whistles out and go for a more secure browser.

#2 - Lavasoft's Adaware. This is an anti-spyware program that does a good job at finding some kinds of spyware. There isn't a single spyware removal software that can get every single piece of spyware out there, so it takes a combo. For the first of the combo, you can 't go wrong with Adaware. Run this every 2 weeks or when you have idle time on the computer. It keeps things moving fast, furious, and does get rid of a alot of pesky critters.

#3 - Spybot Search and Destroy. This is the other piece of the combo that will keep your machine closer to spyware free. Run this along side Adaware and you will have the majority of the spyware.

Those 3 steps will usually keep you close to being spyware free. It is all about your surfing habits and where you go online. If you start getting popup's or your machine starts running slow, break out the software tools which are are available in our Software download section on the right.

If you end up with spyware you can't remove, reboot your computer and hit F8 on the computer right before Windows starts to boot. You will see an option to "Run in Windows Safe Mode". Select that and then try using Adaware and Spybot. If you still have spyware after that, give our Forum's a shout for more skilled spyware removing.

Happy Surfing!

Internet Speed Measurements

ImageAre you ready for the next level of Internet? Are you still on a 56K modem? Just what is that K? Well here is a breakdown of exactly what is what.

Here is a breakdown of some current speeds:

14.4 Modem 14.4 Kbit/s 28.8 Modem 28.8 Kbit/s 33.6 Modem 33.6 Kbit/s 56k Modem 56 Kbit/s Leased Line (56K) 56 Kbit/s Single Channel ISDN 64 Kbit/s Dual Channel ISDN 128 Kbit/s Frame Relay 64 Kbit/s - 1.544 Mbit/s T-1 1.544 Mbit/s Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) 6 Mbit/s Downstream 640 Kbit/s Upstream Consumer DSL (CDSL) 1 Mbit/s Downstream 128 Kbit/s Upstream High-speed DSL (HDSL) 1.544 Mbit/s ISDN DSL (ISDL) 128 Kbit/s Rate-adaptive DSL (RADSL) 6 Mbit/s Downstream 640 Kbit/s Upstream Single-pair HDSL (S-HDSL) 768 Kbit/s Symmetric DSL (SDSL) 2 Mbit/s Very high-speed DSL (VDSL) 51 Mbit/s Downstream 2.3 Mbit/s Upstream Direct PC (satellite) 400 Kbit/s Cable Modem 10 Mbit/s Wireless 60 Mbit/s

What does all of this mean? Well for us techy's, the faster the better, but for most people a 1 - 3 megabit connection is all you really need. As times change that won't always be true. In 2 - 3 years it will be 5 - 6 megabit standards and beyond that is gonna be a fiber optic war. More and more services will be Internet bound and eventually we will come to depend on it for even more than what we do today.

How can I test my Internet speed? Well that is easy. There are several Internet speed tests on the web. Do a Google search for "Internet Speed Test" and you will find a lot of them. When doing your tests remember to pick the closest server. A lot of times the servers and the pipes are loaded down and you won't get a true reading. If your ISP has a local speed test page, that is the best way to get true bandwidth performance from you to your ISP's network operations room.
